Physical Exam

Examination Of Stoma

Examination of a stoma is the systematic clinical assessment of a surgically created opening on the abdominal wall—evaluating its color, size, shape, output, and surrounding skin—to detect complications such as ischemia, retraction, prolapse, parastomal hernia, or mucocutaneous separation.

Examination of Stoma

Step 1: Identify the Stoma Type — "What Is This Stoma?"

This is the first thing the examiner is testing. You need to classify the stoma before you start describing complications. Think of it as a systematic checklist [1][2][3]:

Step 2: Inspection

Once the bag is removed (ask first!), systematically inspect [1][2][3]:

Step 3: Palpation

Always ask for permission and wear gloves! 「我會輕輕掂吓你嘅造口,可能會有少少唔舒服,如果痛就話我知。」(I will gently touch around your stoma. It may be slightly uncomfortable — please tell me if it is painful.)

Step 4: Special Tests and Named Clinical Signs

Step 5: Completing the Examination

To show the examiner you are thinking holistically [1][3]:
