A systematic clinical assessment of the peripheral arteries through inspection, palpation of pulses, auscultation for bruits, and special tests to evaluate arterial perfusion and detect occlusive or aneurysmal disease in the extremities.

General Inspection

Stand at the end of the bed and take 10 seconds to look.

Inspection of the Lower Limbs

Inspect systematically: both legs compared side by side, anteriorly, medially, laterally, and posteriorly (ask patient to roll slightly or lift the leg).

Focus on:

  1. Colour
  2. Trophic changes
  3. Scars
  4. Ulcers and gangrene
  5. Amputations

Palpation

Always ask before you touch: "I am going to feel your legs now. Please let me know if it is painful." 「我而家摸吓你隻腳,如果痛就話我知。」
