Examination Of Parotid Glands

Examination of the parotid glands is a systematic clinical assessment involving inspection, palpation (bimanually, both extraorally and intraorally), and evaluation of Stensen's duct for swelling, tenderness, masses, and salivary flow to detect inflammatory, obstructive, or neoplastic pathology.

General Inspection

Start from the end of the bed. This is your chance to gather a surprising amount of information before laying a finger on the patient.

3. Examination of Parotid (Stensen's) Duct

This is critical and commonly tested. The Stensen's duct is the conduit from the parotid gland to the oral cavity — stones, pus, and tumours can involve it.

Anatomy [1][2]:

  • Stensen's duct arises from the anterior border of the parotid gland, 4–7 cm long
  • Runs along the middle 1/3 of a line drawn from the tragus to the philtrum [1]
  • Opens opposite to the upper 2nd maxillary molar on the buccal mucosa [1]
