Physical Exam

Examination Of Peripheral Venous System

A systematic clinical assessment of the superficial and deep veins of the extremities to evaluate for varicosities, venous insufficiency, thrombosis, and other abnormalities through inspection, palpation, and special maneuvers such as the Trendelenburg and Perthes tests.

Examination of the Peripheral Venous System

A. Systematic Inspection

This is the core of the venous examination. You need to inspect anteriorly and posteriorly and along the entire course of the great saphenous vein (GSV) and small saphenous vein (SSV) [1][2].

Running commentary:

"I will now inspect the legs anteriorly and posteriorly, looking specifically along the course of the great and small saphenous veins for any varicosities and signs of chronic venous insufficiency."

Walk around the patient. Make a deliberate gesture to show the examiner you are inspecting both front and back of both legs.

B. Palpation

Ask the patient if they have any pain before you touch. 「我而家會摸你對腳,有冇邊度痛?」("I'm going to feel your legs now — is there anywhere that is painful?")

C. Special Tests
